🗓️ 1:1 language learning classes
your ultimate guide to learning languages 1:1 on somos!
- 💪🏾 take control of your language journey with flexible class options.
- 🎓 understand how teachers set their own rules for a personalized learning experience.
- 👀 explore the benefits of both one-off classes and subscription packages.
✅ the basics
- 👉🏾 duration:
- all classes are 45 mins, with a 15-min built in break between classes.
- this is partly to ensure teachers get a break between classes but also to make sure they have some in case a previous class overruns ⏱️
- 👉🏾 classroom:
- your teacher sets their classroom. it will either be in their voice & video room on heartbeat, zoom or google meet.
- your calendar invite will include a link to the relevant classroom and instructions of how to join
- 👉🏾 subscriptions:
- you can sign up for subscriptions of 4, 8, 12 and 16 classes a month.
- subscriptions automatically renew every month but you can cancel anytime.
- each month, you can roll over up to 50% of your monthly package.
- rather than expire, any other "leftover" classes can be "gifted" to a friend or "donated" to someone who couldn't otherwise afford a class. [coming soon]
- 👉🏾 pricing & policies:
- teachers set their own refund, booking and cancellation policies on somos.
- these are all available on their profile pages so please check before buying anything!
‣
1️⃣ one-off classes
- just a one-off class. you can buy this ad hoc as and when.
‣
🧪 trial classes
- not all teachers will offer a trial class.
- rather than just a cheaper version of a class, we recommend teachers treat this as a “diagnostic” coaching type of call where you can see if they’re a good fit for your language learning goals.
‣
🔁 monthly subscriptions
- 👉🏾 teachers can offer subscriptions of 4, 8, 12 and 16 classes a month.
- 👉🏾 subscriptions automatically renew every month but you can cancel anytime.
- 👉🏾 each month, you can roll over up to 50% of that month's package
- 👉🏾 rather than expire, any other "leftover" classes can be "gifted" to a friend or "donated" to someone who couldn't otherwise afford the class.
- a quick example…
- 👉🏾 month 1: you buy a pack of 4. you only use 1 class. you roll 2 over and gift the other to a friend. your friend gets a month to book the class.
- 👉🏾 month 2: you gets a fresh set of 4 classes plus the 2 you rolled over. you manage to fit in all 6 classes this time. you’ve none left to roll over or gift.

🤷🏾♂️ one-off classes or a subscription… what’s best for me?
‣
🤔 initial considerations…
- 🔄 flexibility vs. structure: some students thrive with the flexibility of one-off classes, while others benefit from the structured routine a subscription can offer.
- 💰 financial planning: while subscriptions require a higher upfront cost, they can lead to significant savings over time for regular learners. one-off classes allow for pay-as-you-go flexibility but might cost more in the long run.
- 🎨 your learning style: do you prefer a structured learning path, or do you like the flexibility to explore various teaching styles?
- 🗓️ your schedule: how much time can you realistically dedicate to language learning each month? can you commit to a regular schedule that a subscription would require?
- 🎯 your goals: are you looking for a long-term learning partner and a structured path, or are you exploring different languages and teaching styles?
‣
1️⃣ one-off classes: pros & cons
- ✅ no ongoing commitment, flexible.
- ✅ don’t expire.
- ✅ try before you commit (ideal for sampling different teachers or languages).
- 🙀 more expensive per class.
- 🙀 lower commitment might not be so great for accountability.
- 🙀 can buy one at a time so cheaper initial outlay.
‣
🔁 subscriptions: pros & cons
- ✅ cheaper per class.
- ✅ can rollover 50% of package to the next month if you’re unexpectedly busy.
- ✅ can cancel at any time.
- ✅ regular commitment = better learning outcomes.
- ✅ consistent learning journey with a specific teacher.
- 🙀 only 50% of credits rollover if you don’t use them.
- 🙀 linked to a specific teacher, so it’s crucial to choose someone you’re comfortable with.
- 🙀 higher upfront cost.
