1) applicants must be over 18
- we ask for a confirmation of your date of birth and then cross check with an ID via the verification process.
β£
2) please include basic details in your somos profile before submitting your application
- the more information you include in your somos profile, the better!
- as a minimum, please ensure you have completed the following sections before applying:
- about me
- profile picture
- languages you teach & speak
- location & time zone
β£
3) verify your ID
- itβs optional to get your ID verified to have a profile on somos but we do need to verify all teachers that teach courses on the platform.
- if you are undocumented for any reason we do have an alternative route whereby you can get verified via a referral from a 3rd party NGO, charity or social enterprise.
- please check the guidance below or get in touch with us for help.
top tip: check out how to get ID verified here.
β£
4) confirm you can accept payments on somos via stripe connect
- we use stripe as our payment gateway. this means:
- we can accept payments from students anywhere in the world.
- teachers are independent sellers on the platform and will need to set up stripe connect accounts to receive payments.
- in order to do this:
- you will ideally need to be a resident in one of stripe's 47 countries;
- if you are outside stripeβs 47 countries but have a wise account, you should be able to connect this to stripe. wise extends coverage for teachers to 170+ countries.
- you will need to pass stripeβs know your client checks.

π€ frequently asked questions
β£
- no, you do not. if you do have one, we'd recommend including it in your profile and also factoring it in when setting your pay rates.
- we do think it's reasonable for students to expect you to be at an advanced level of the language you are teaching.
β£
- no! each course creator comes with their own story and we're here to support you market that to students in a way that resonates with them.
- plenty of non-native linguists work incredibly hard to get to a level where they can teach languages to others and if that's you, we'd feel lucky to have you teach on our platform!
- we do think it's reasonable for students to expect you to be at an advanced level of the language you are teaching.
β£
yes, weβd love for you to create + teach courses with us but please note the following limitations/things to take into account:
- identity verification: we do require all teachers to go through this process. to make this more accessible, weβve created a specific route for refugees & asylum seekers.
- payments:
- please note that in order to actually teach on somos, weβd need a way to be able to pay you. for our beta, this would mean setting up with stripe and passing their separate verification procedure.
- depending on local immigration restrictions where you are based, it may not be possible for you to open a bank account or e-wallet.
- we are exploring other avenues so that teaching on somos is accessible for asylum seekers & refugees. please bear with us!
